30-Second Cure for Anxiety: Remember Your Favorite Things!

“Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens

These are a few of my favorite things.”

Just reading these lyrics–sung by Julie Andrews portraying the character of Maria in The Sound of Music–puts a smile on my face.

After all, she, along with Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, had the right idea.

Keeping a few of your favorite things on your desk can de-stress you quickly. Things such as photos, flowers, or small mementoes can bring a smile to your face, and calm your anxiety.

I keep a few of my favorite things on my own desk. This swirling glass paperweight is one of them:

I’ve found that when I begin to feel anxious, taking a few seconds to gaze at (or hold) something beautiful brings me to a place of beauty, serenity and gratitude.
