Should I stay or should I go?

Funny—these words from the song of the same name by The Clash came to mind when a client recently asked me about retirement.

The thought of retirement is in one way thrilling and in another way frightening!

It’s easy to know what you’re retiring from. It’s harder to decide what you’re retiring to.

You can ease your journey by starting to imagine what retirement would look like for you. Let your mind wander—what would your perfect week look like—day by day? Make it up! And, whatever you do, don’t limit yourself. Have fun! What do you love to do? Do you have a bucket list? Do you have hobbies? Could you put any of that in motion now? Could you negotiate more time off, including half and work-from-home days, to ease yourself into the next phase? Would/could you work part-time? What would that look like?

If you decide to jump without a plan, that’s fine. Some people need to cruise for a while to see what bubbles up.

But a little planning never hurts!

Just remember—this is your time. You’ve earned it. It’s all about what works for you.

Cheers to dreaming and creating what’s next!
