Well—it’s Christmas Day, and for many that means happiness and celebration. It is a birthday party after all!
However, for many people, Christmas can feel like a let-down. After all the office parties and frantic rush to shop, prep and finish work before the holiday begins, you can be left feeling sort of blah.
If this describes you, then try one or all of these:
Manage your expectations. With all the retail and social media hoopla, the holidays seem to start a helluva lot earlier these days—say, around October. So, the build-up feels enormous. Often we tend to have high expectations that, when unmet, make us feel disappointed and depressed. So—let go of those expectations. Get rid of the “shoulds.” Notice every good thing around you—big and small–and make up your mind to enjoy!
Be around happy people. It is a scientific fact that we are happier when we are around happy people, so be with those that make you smile and laugh. If your family’s not doing it for you, call friends, or watch funny movies or silly you-tube videos. Whatever it takes–do it!
Reach out. If you feel lonely or isolated, seek out company and/or community. Pick up the phone or skype friends and family, or head to where people gather: churches, movies (Star Wars, perhaps??), online sites—wherever you can find companionship. Volunteering is also a good way to focus outside yourself, and lift your spirits by helping others.
Do something unexpected. Make a new tradition. Maybe it’s curling up with a good movie or book, or driving around town to see holiday decorations. I remember one year, my niece and I purchased this giant stuffed elf and a few other tacky items and “decorated” a friend’s stoop. We were hysterical performing this covert operation, and my friend loved it so much, it started its own tradition.
Know that all things pass. Bad times and good times come and go, so be patient with yourself, and be patient with life. You may wake up feeling down, but give the day a chance. It’s amazing how often things change if we let them. So make up your mind to let them change for the better!
